Business - Copying Course Materials & Packets

Copyright Approval

The making of multiple copies of articles or other materials is governed by University policies which can be viewed at http://infoshare1.princeton.edu/reserves/libcitcopyright.html.

Guidelines on copyright basics and fair use can be found at http://web.princeton.edu/sites/ogc/newcopyright/Fair%20Use%20Guidelines.pdf.

For further guidance, see http://web.princeton.edu/sites/ogc/Copyrightbasics.htm, an introduction to copyright law as it applies to scholarly and educational activities and an overview of the digital technologies that the University offers for delivering course materials to students.

In sum, the University position is that specific approval is required to include articles, book chapters, etc. in your course packets and, therefore, the Business Office will copy and distribute WWS course materials only if these materials are submitted with proper copyright approvals. Faculty members and/or staff are responsible for obtaining all copyright approvals. Requests for photocopying that do not include proper copyright approvals will be returned.

The quickest way to acquire copyright approvals for course packet materials is to use the electronic clearing house found at http://www.copyright.com/. Contact the Business Office for the user ID and password.

Course materials provided to the Facilities Office for copying must include the following:

  • a copy of the copyright approval for each item to be copied;
  • a clear copy of individual chapters, articles, etc., not the entire book or journal

Charges for Copying Material

A copy of the order for copies must be submitted with the number of the course (e.g., WWS 300) for which the materials will be used to the Accounts Payable Coordinator in the WWS financial management office. It is recommended that you keep a copy of the order form for your files.

Sales of Copied Course Materials to Students and Others

The Facilities Office will sell course materials to students at cost. In order to make sure your course materials will be available for the beginning of the semester, please have everything to the Facilities Office at least two weeks prior to the start of classes.

Payments for purchase of course packets or other course materials can be made only to the School's Facilities Office. Faculty secretaries or program secretaries may not handle such transactions under any circumstances.

The School has asked the Donald E. Stokes Library to put one unbound copy of required graduate course readings on reserve. Students can make their own copies of the materials at the student copy machines or at a copy center (not the WWS Facilities Office) and should contact the Library directly. The Facilities Office will make the unbound copy.

All payments must be made by check, payable to Princeton University. If you plan to sell materials for School courses, please discuss the arrangements with the Accounts Payable Coordinator before ordering any books, copying any packets, or otherwise incurring charges. University internal auditors have specified the procedures that we must follow, from initial charge to payment collection, and the entire transaction must be planned in advance.

Copying for Courses Outside of WWS

Copying for courses in other departments such as politics and economics should be done in those departments, not in the School's copy room. Copying for courses offered jointly by WWS and another department may be done in the School's copy room.
