Computing Services

Antivirus Software: The University has a site license for Symantec AntiVirus. All PCs and laptop computers set up by the WWS Computing Services Office have Symantec AntiVirus installed and configured, and all student computers purchased through the Student Computer Initiative (SCI) are shipped with Symantec AntiVirus pre-loaded and configured. If you own other computers, Symantec AntiVirus is available as a free download from the University's OIT website to all Princeton University faculty, staff and students. Detailed instructions for installing and configuring the software are also available on the same page.

Computer Room Reservations: Rooms 40 and 42 may be reserved for classes and workshops by submitting the Cluster Reservation Form. There are fifteen Dell computers in Room 40 and thirteen in Room 42. They have the standard cluster software installed. Reservations must be made at least two days in advance, and reservations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. The schedules for the rooms are posted on the doors stating the date and time the room will not be available for general use. If you want to use a projector and/or a laptop, see the section "Multimedia Equipment" below.

It is also possible to reserve the electronic classroom in Stokes Library

Computing Supplies: Printer toner cartridges, media (CDs, DVDs, zip disks, diskettes),  name tags, transparencies for printers and other computing peripherals are available in the Computing Services Office.  Please come to 004 Robertson to pick up supplies.  You may also drop off used toner cartridges for recycling.

Courses on the Web: The University has licensed Blackboard for use by Princeton faculty and staff. Blackboard provides a powerful and easy-to-use web based tool suite to build and manage virtual classrooms. Instructors from the University's Office of Information Technology will pay faculty an office visit to assist with getting started. If you would like to use Blackboard for your course, please visit the Blackboard site for more information.
General Information: When you log on to your office computer, you will connect to the Princeton domain. All users have been assigned a folder (directory) on the OIT Central File Server (CFS) for data storage. This "home directory" can be located by referencing \\files\netid mapped to the H:\ drive.  Detailed information regarding CFS is available on the OIT Knowledge Base.  Additional WWS network resources are located on \\files\dept\wws\admin mapped to S:\ and \\files\dept\wws\research mapped to R:.
Hardware: WWS supplies office computers for all faculty and staff. The standard machine is a Dell Optiplex running Windows XP. WWS office computers are part of Princeton's DeSC program that provides a standardized desktop computer environment for administrative computing. This equipment is replaced on a three year cycle. Many offices have local printers also.

If faculty would like enhancements to the standard configuration, the cost of the add-ons will be charged to faculty research accounts.  The cost of any additional equipment will also be charged to faculty research accounts.  Enhancements to staff computers and additional equipment, including home equipment, must be approved by unit managers and will be charged to unit or department accounts.

All purchases will be the standard configurations and models recommended and supported by WWS Computing Services.  All computer equipment including hardware, software and computer supplies  must be purchased through the Computing Services Office.  This equipment must be replaced when it falls below the minimum hardware standard.
Laptop Loan: Laptops are available for short-term loan (up to two weeks) for faculty and staff. Five days advance notice is requested. To request a laptop, complete the Laptop Reservation Form. You will be notified within one business day whether a laptop is available for the period you request.
Laptop Registration: If you are using your laptop on campus regularly, it should be registered in the campus host database. Please fill out the Laptop Registration Form and WWS Computing will register it for you. If you are only using your laptop occasionally (up to seven days a month), you can use the Visitor Wireless Service.
Multimedia Equipment: The Business Office coordinates the use of all multimedia equipment at WWS. They will arrange for delivery and set-up of slide projectors, laptops, and the multimedia projector and can also provide training if needed. Please contact the Business Office for equipment and training requests.
Princeton Office Hours Scheduling System: The online Princeton Office Hours Scheduling System (POHSS, pronounced "Paws") is a calendar system that allows faculty and students to interact via the web to set, cancel, and reschedule appointments. See Knowledge Base article for more information.
Printing: WWS has centrally located network printers available for faculty and staff in addition to local printers in some individual offices. See Network Printers for locations and instructions.
Purchases: All computing equipment including hardware, software, computer supplies and PDAs (personal digital assistants) must be purchased through the Computing Department at WWS to ensure that it meets University standards.

This policy is defined in the University Guidelines for Non-Compensation Expenses and WWS Policies and Procedures.
Scanning: The Business Office (004 Robertson) offers a drop-off scanning service, which is available to all faculty and staff. Please see the Business Office page for details.

In addition, WWS has a public Epson scanner in 404B Robertson and four network scanners that allow a scanned document to be sent as an e-mail attachment.
Software: The University's Central Software set includes Windows XP Professional and Internet Explorer 6.0, Microsoft Office 2003, Symantec AntiVirus 10, Adobe Acrobat 7.05 Professional and Reader, Adobe Photoshop CS2, Macromedia Dreamweaver 8, SSH Secure Shell, and TSM (network backup software). For a detailed description visit http://www.princeton.edu/desc/software/software_set.html. These software packages should already be installed on your office PC. There are also special licensing agreements for a number of other software packages including Stata, SAS and Scientific Workplace. Computing Services can advise you of additional costs and install these packages for you. Please contact the WWS Help Desk to discuss your software needs and set up an appointment for installation. Your office or program will be charged the additional licensing fee, if any.
Unix Computing: On January 30, 2006, the Sun Solaris Arizona servers were replaced with Dell servers running Redhat Enterprise Linux. To accommodate the needs of those members of the Princeton community who run computationally intensive jobs using commercial software like Matlab, SAS, and Mathematica, open source software, or home grown applications, OIT provides a 64-bit computing service on both a Sun Solaris platform and a Linux platform.
The registration web page www.princeton.edu/register64 requires only a University netID and password.
Wireless: Wireless ethernet service is available in all of WWS (Robertson, Bendheim, Corwin, Fisher and Wallace Halls) and many points on campus. The network is constantly expanding, so consult this map for the latest information on wireless access point locations and the areas currently covered:
Wireless Network Coverage Areas.

Visitors to campus may use the Visitor Wireless Service without registering their wireless devices. Visitor Wireless provides service for up to seven days within a calendar month. It is not intended to provide service to devices used regularly on campus by Princeton University faculty, staff, and students, or to longer-term visitors. Those devices should be registered in the Campus Host Database. The WWS Help Desk will register personal laptops for visitors once the Registration Form is completed.
