Vista Migration

Overview

In February 2007, the Desktop Systems Council and OIT approved the migration of all DeSC machines to Windows Vista between January 2008  and August 2009.

OIT created a Vista Implementaiton and Migration Team to test Vista and Office 2007 on campus and research potential conflicts with existing Princeton systems, as well as formalizing plans for rolling out these products to campus. Information regarding this project can be found online at www.princeton.edu/vista and in the letter sent from the Team to the campus community. In May 2007 OIT released a long range provisional roadmap for supporting MIcrosoft Vista, Office 2007 and Internet Explorer in the DeSC environment.

WWS Migration

WWS started migrating users in January 2008 and will continue through August 2009.  All computers will be replaced with models capable of running Vista (currently Dell 745 and Dell 755).  Every effort will be made to convert everyone in a program office or center at the same time.

OIT has created a process to transfer the files and settings from your current XP computer to your new Vista machine.  A WWS Help Desk technician will contact you to schedule a time to review the specifics of your current machine and to copy the information.  Once the information has been copied, you may continue working on your machine but you should not save anything on the local hard drive.  In order to complete the installation you will login to your new Vista computer so the data can be transferred and personal settings configured.  The installation of your new machine will be scheduled so as to have as little disruption as possible.

Resources

OIT is offering Vista and Office 2007 classes.  It would be helpful to attend these - either right before or shortly after the installation of your new machine.  Register for OIT Training
